Dear supporters,

This October, states will once again vote on a resolution on uranium weapons at the UN General Assembly. We have been doing what we can to influence the content of the resolution and will do what we can to influence the outcome of the vote. An ICBUW delegation will be at the talks in New York in October and while there we will present the findings of our recent research into the legacy of uranium munitions use in the Balkans.

Two previous UN resolutions in 2007 and 2008 have been extremely effective at raising international awareness of the issue. We hope that a third will highlight key failings in the international response to depleted uranium contamination and allow states and civil society to focus on resolving them. At present states are not required to reveal where they have used the weapons, or assist contaminated states in cleaning up the mess – nor do they accept any legal responsibility for the weapons once they are fired. It will be a crucial vote and we urgently need additional funds to allow us to undertake the lobbying work required to ensure it is passed. In order to begin the process of helping the victims of the weapons we need transparency from the users.

Thanks to the support of donors we are slowly expanding our operation but the pace of the campaign is currently outstripping our capacity to take advantage of the changing political environment. While we have attracted funding for specific research projects, paying for the core costs that keep us functioning is proving far more challenging.
