United Nations First Committee overwhelmingly backs new uranium weapons resolution
127 states back a second resolution highlighting health concerns over the use of uranium in conventional weapons. Several key states including Norway, the Netherlands and Finland change their positions to back the resolution. The resolution calls the IAEA, WHO and UNEP to update their positions on DU by 2010.

UN Secretary General publishes report on DU weapons
In response to 2007's General Assembly Resolution, the UN Secretary General published a report on the use of uranium weapons. The report contains the opinions of 19 states plus those of the IAEA, WHO and UNEP. States were split 50/50 on the issue with several calling for an outright ban. NATO members Germany, Spain and the Netherlands didn't.

Finnish Minister of Foreign Affairs acknowledges need for uranium weapons treaty
"The government is well aware of the health and environmental effects of the use of weapons containing depleted uranium and does not see any reason to underestimate problems connected with uranium weapons. On the contrary, the government considers tackling the negative effects of uranium weapons important and considers a ban on weapons containing depleted uranium an important goal."
European Parliament establishes a DU Working Group
Cross party committee set up to try and tackle the DU problem, several questions are submitted to the European Commission and Council, work begins on a wide-ranging resolution requesting a global DU ban.
UK politicians and NGOs condemn renewed DU test firing
The Scottish Environment Minister and Green and Scottish Nationalist Members of the Scottish Parliament join forces to condemn the UK Ministry of Defence’s decision to renew uranium weapon testing at its firing range near Dundrennan on the Solway Firth in southern Scotland. During the five days of testing it emerges that the UK's ageing DU ammunition has past its reliable usage date.

On December 5th, 136 countries vote in favour of a resolution highlighting serious health concerns over the use of depleted uranium weapons.

Japanese NGOs lobby the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tokyo
Earlier in the year, 129 NGOs and 563 individuals from across Japan submit a letter requesting a total ban on DU, research into areas affected by its use and support for victims. The Ministry responds: “We might consider some new factors to work on this issue, though we are still in the early stages of planning any activities.”
Italy agrees to the first ever wide scale compensation package for DU contaminated veterans
In early December, the Italian Ministry of Defence gives evidence to the Italian parliament for a second time over concerns about the level of cancers in Italian troops and peacekeepers. The Commission on DU, based in the Senate, hears that the latest estimate of cancer victims has risen to 77 dead and 312 ill. Public pressure results in a 170 million Euro compensation package for veterans suffering from post-conflict illnesses

UN First Committee passes DU resolution in landslide vote
The resolution entitled 'Effects of the use of armaments and ammunitions containing depleted uranium' is passed by 122 votes to six at the UN First Committee in New York; with 35 abstentions. The resolution urges UN member states to re-examine the health hazards posed by the use of uranium weapons.

On November 6th ICBUW member organizations launch a global disinvestment campaign against investments by high street banks and investment companies around the world in the manufacturers of uranium weapons. Actions take place at banks worldwide.

ICBUW submits report on DU to the United Nations
ICBUW uses the occasion of the International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflicts to urge the U.N. to consider a ban on uranium weapons, specifically depleted uranium weapons, which have been used in at least four wars and most recently in urban areas in the Iraq War of 2003.
