Belgian Socialist Party in Plea to UK Government Over DU Ban

A message to the UK Labour Party from Dirk Van der Maelen, leader of the Flemish Socialists in the Belgian Parliament.
12 March 2007 - ICBUW

To our friends of the British Labour Party

We should ban uranium weapons

In the Belgian Parliament we are currently discussing a proposal to ban uranium weapons. We, as Flemish socialists, submitted this proposal. If approved, Belgium would be the first country in the world to ban these weapons. Indeed, we also would like to remind you that Belgium was the first country in the world to ban anti –personnel mines and cluster bombs.

We are not only aiming at banning these weapons in Belgium. We are in favour of a world-wide ban on uranium weapons. These weapons do threaten civil populations and cause long-term harmful negative effects on human health (cancers!) and the environment. Since our soldiers are increasingly involved in peace-keeping missions, we do not want them to be confronted with those weapons. Hence, we want them to be fully banned, world-wide.

We would be very much obliged if also the Labour Party would consider supporting the campaign against uranium weapons.
